3 Lawn Mowing Tips

Lawn mowing is a chore few relish, but a necessity nonetheless. If you’re an amateur, mowing the lawn can seem like a total nightmare. Read the tips below for tricks of the trade that can make your least favorite task just a little bit easier.

  1. Keep the Blades Sharp

This may seem like a no-brainer, but you would be surprised by how many people are hacking away at their lawn each week with a dull lawnmower blade. Keep your metal blades sharp for more efficient mowing. Typically, you will only need to sharpen the blade once per season, so include this task with your annual mower maintenance routine.

  1. Perfect Your Timing

Optimal timing for mowing the lawn is at the coolest point of the day, so think early morning or evening. Cutting the grass when it’s cooler allows for moisture retention in the roots of the grass. Further, this allows you to stay cool and reduces the chance of heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses. Although early morning and night are the coolest time of the day, early morning means dewy grass. You should avoid cutting a wet lawn because it is messy but also because it isn’t great for the health of the grass.

  1. Don’t Cut it Too Short

It can be tempting to cut your lawn as short as possible in the hopes that it will give you more time in between mowing. However, cutting grass too short can actually allow more weeds to grow since the blades of grass are not shading the ground. Additionally, leaving the grass a bit longer is simply healthier for the growth of your lawn.

Hopefully, these tips can help make mowing your lawn just a little bit easier. Remember to keep a sharp blade, time your grass-cutting properly and let it grow longer.
